about embodied supervision

At Embodied Supervision, we hold the highest vision for your practice, career development and self-care.

This work impacts us

How is it impacting you, really?

As a social worker and counsellor working with clients experiencing complex trauma for 20 years, I began to understand how this work can impact upon us, the practitioners.  We can be impacted by the effects of sitting with individual trauma, the ways client trauma is tied to their culture, structures and  society, and workplace culture, societal structures and culture.

My work over the past 20 years has focused on individual and group therapy in the fields of sexual assault, childhood trauma and family violence.  I feel strongly about finding sustainable ways to manage the vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout that seem inevitable in this work.  I believe, and have witnessed, how embodiment practices assist us to reflect in ways that truly combat these effects and allow us to remain sustainably in the roles we love and have built high levels of expertise in, to be able to support our clients more fully.

Embodied Supervision is an online membership portal, with high quality, trauma informed clinical supervision that is affordable and accessible for social workers and trauma practitioners at any stage of their career.  My dream is for new graduates to be able to build sustainable practices that prevent burnout, and more experienced practitioners to deeply reflect, investigate and unravel some of the impacts of the work so far.

We use embodiment practices to discover how the work is truly impacting us, and to integrate and process this information.

Hi, I'm Sophie.

I am a clinical supervisor and trauma therapist, passionate about leading with the body and dropping into presence and authenticity.

My social work roots underpin my work and create a foundation based in community-minded, feminist, intersectional practice.

Supervision with me is flavoured by my passion for self awareness, embodiment and relational, process-oriented practice, as well as 20 years’ clinical experience.  I have participated in extensive individual and group supervision and reflective practice throughout my career.

The education I deliver has a strong embodiment focus so that the learning is embedded on experiential as well as cognitive levels.

I bring a keen curiosity, unwavering respect and unconditional positive regard to my practice with supervisees and clients, my consulting work in this field, and my relationships with colleagues.  I am deeply committed to walking beside you as you trust and follow your own wisdom, experience and body to access what you truly need in this work.  My style is straightforward, ‘call it like i see it’, intuitive, allowing space for your own timing, focusing on safety and gently challenging when required.

Tune into your body, and see if my experience and approach fit with your growth and learning goals:

  • I have 20 years’ experience counselling and education with children, adolescents and adults in community and health settings.
  • I have spent 14 years specialising in trauma therapy, working with issues of complex trauma, sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, mental health issues, life transitions, relationships and self esteem.
  • I have hundreds of hours of experience facilitating individual, couple and family sessions, adult and young women’s groups, and a long-standing men’s group for sexual abuse victim/survivors.
  • I have been a clinical supervisor for the past 6 years, focused on supervising and educating therapists, as well as practitioners from other professions who regularly work with people experiencing trauma (including yoga teachers and alternative therapy practitioners).  I integrate my experience in Kundalini Yoga, meditation and integrative embodiment practices into my work and approach.

Testimonials

Sophie models a somatic grounding aspect throughout our sessions which has supported me to develop that aspect in my own style of practice. Sophie is respectful, supportive, non-judgemental, highly experienced and extremely easy to speak with.

By joining me in some difficult places, structuring outcomes, and purposefully holding space, I have experienced a supervision environment of care and growth with Sophie. The work seems possible when we are supported in ways that nurture and value us; this is the space Sophie provides.

Inviting body awareness and embodiment practices has been new for me in the supervision space. Sophie has explored my existing relationship with movement and practices of self-expression, then built on these in ways that address the issues we work on together. This capacity building has opened an avenue of awareness and purpose for me in the way I practice “self-care” and hold, or let go of, whatever my work gives me.

Sophie creates a space for me to critically reflect on current themes in my practice, this includes my broader social work pathway. Here, spirituality, somatic experiences, the unconscious and dreams are all valid and welcome to be explored. Sophie has extensive knowledge and skills on trauma and vicarious trauma; and there is a focus in her sessions on embodiment.
